The private sector is in a unique position to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic by creating awareness about the epidemic in the workplace, reducing stigma and discrimination and encouraging safe practices among employees. The response can be extended to committing resources to facilitate research and development of preventive health technologies, such as AIDS vaccines. The private sector can also provide strategic inputs on issues related to access and deployment, as and when a safe and effective AIDS vaccine is available, and dialogue with the government and policymakers to discuss potentially beneficial incentives to support and enhance private sector involvement in AIDS vaccine efforts in India.

IAVI advocates among leading business houses for support for the AIDS vaccine initiative. Towards this end, a round-table discussion was conducted with 30 senior corporate leaders in India. It was convened by Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons and Mr K R Narayanamurthy, Chief Mentor, Infosys. IAVI actively collaborates with institutional bodies such as the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to increase awareness about preventive AIDS vaccines and the ongoing research efforts in India.

IAVI engages the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector in India in an attempt to capitalise on their strengths of product development and manufacturing capabilities and involves them actively in AIDS vaccine R&D. (Click here to read ‘Promoting R&D in Preventive Health Technologies’). Such collaborations can potentially create a more conducive policy regime, examine areas of potential interest for Indian industry to undertake R&D efforts in this area and explore innovative models of partnership.

 Corporate Responsibility

"A successful vaccine programme will eventually protect and enhance Indian business. Therefore, it is critical that we work together from its inception towards achieving the common goal."

Mr. Narayana Murthy
Chairman, Infosys Technologies

"It is the moral imperative of Indian business to join hands in this crusade against AIDS. This can be possible through an extensive and effective intervention programme, including development of an effective HIV vaccine. "

Mr. Ratan Tata
Chairman, Tata Sons Ltd.

" Business leaders have a unique opportunity to be strong and visible advocates for greater action and partnership with other sectors. We are extremely grateful for the immense response we have received from the corporate leaders of India and hope this beacon of leadership will inspire all businesses, large and small, around the world to push for a vaccine."

Dr. Seth Berkeley
President, IAVI.
